Reds Play Galaxy

Los Angeles Galaxy vs  Toronto FC

Sat. May 15 10:30 p.m.

(live on Rogers Sportsnet)

Major Test for TFC

Saturday’s game will be a significant test for the improving Toronto FC. The league leading Galaxy have been a dominating force this season, and are well ahead of the competition in the MLS West and even more so when compared to the East. LA hold a 7 point lead in the standings over the next team, the NY Red Bulls, and are 9 points better than their next two rivals in West. The Galaxy have a 13 point lead over TFC in the standings and a record of 7-0-1 thus far. There are some other telling gaps in the sides when you look at other stats too, though these may be closing now as Toronto FC start to come together as a team. Most significantly, the LA Galaxy are leading the league in both Goals For (15) and Goals Against (2) in 8 games. The Reds, by comparison, have just 11 GF and have allowed 13 GA in their first 7 games.

Biggest Challenge

Toronto FC’s greatest hurdle tomorrow night will be reversing their trend of playing poorly away from home. The Galaxy are unbeaten at home in all competitions this year, including two friendlies in March. Having only allowed two goals against them in the first 8 matches of 2010, the Galaxy are strong defensively this season. They are also enjoying the burning hot streak of former Toronto FC striker, Edson Buddle, who leads in the scoring race and has been riding that hot foot all the way to the US World Cup training camp. Importantly for Toronto FC, the Galaxy have allowed goals only at home thus far, and they are missing both of their leading Right Backs in defense for this match due to injuries.

David Beckham may not be playing this season, but Landon Donovan is always a dangerous competitor and has been having a strong season to follow on the great performance he put in on loan to Everton in the EPL during the off-season. Nana Attakora and Adrian Cann will have to be solid and resilient again, to hold off LA’s speedy attackers. Toronto FC will also need strong games from Dwayne De Rosario and Julian de Guzman, both of whom have been playing well of late. Either of them can provide game changing playmaking going forward. Here’s hoping that the LA back line focus on DeRo while Chad Barrett and O’Brian White can improve on their goal tallies and good form.
