So Long Marvell

Goodbye Marvell

You will not be forgotten. Traded yesterday to the Colorado Rapids for midfielder Nick LaBrocca and a 2011 draft pick, you were one of the originals and a favourite of mine. Now Jim Brennan is the last man standing from the original 2007 roster.

According to Preki’s interview yesterday for TorontoFC TV his main concern is not scoring goals but, rather, “not giving goals away.” As much as I liked and admired Marvell, the truth is that his speed and his heart were what made him great. Lapses of skill and/or judgement in our penalty area were not uncommon for him. His flights down the flank were awesome athletically, but he was only just developing some service touch into the goal-scorers. I would have preferred we kept him. His occasional faults aside, he was a dependable guy with incredible speed and seemed to be improving. He’s got a lot of good years left, and I know many of us will wish him well even when he’s wearing another uniform.

Where Have All The Fullbacks Gone?

Without a defender in the deal to replace him, one has to wonder if this is just the first in a series of moves to rearrange the back line. With the roster so depleted at the season’s opening, the team must be shopping for some new players. I hope there’s some poker being played to shore up the central defending roles: we need a centre back who will clear our area like a pit bull seizing pork chops. And we need someone who can reliably close the deal up front – get us a goal scorer please!
